4．2025年度の研究活動の概要
In this academic year, the ICC has continued its efforts to contribute to public education, community activism and scholarly collaboration. We have continued to build on our existing ties with local communities and agencies with film screenings, expert lectures and other events aimed at public engagement, as well continuing to provide a forum for academic research. On average, in 2025 we have held 1-2 public events per week.
This year we have expanded our research and public activities to new areas, including issues related to sexual violence, colonialism in East Asia and issues related to water and society. Highlights of our activities this year include, supporting the publication of an edited volume exploring the topic of water from an interdisciplinary perspective (July 2025); holding the Sophia symposium ‘Exploring a Japanese Fishing Village through Art’; hosting a two-day event on Sexual Consent in Japan; and screening the documentary ‘Black Box Diary’ along with a talk by the film’s director Shiori Ito.
In 2025, the ICC has continued to expand our international collaborations, both by deepening existing relationship and forging new ones. In March 2025, the ICC hosted a delegation from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila. The ICC director and staff held a productive benchmarking meeting with representatives from six of UST’s research institutes. More collaborations are planned for 2026-2027.
5．予算申請時に計画していたResearch Goals（研究達成目標）や各事業の実施状況
研究所の活動の中心であるResearch Unitsの活動は予算申請時の計画通りに行えなかったユニットもあるものの、おおむね順調に進めることができた。
（各ユニットの活動内容については別添の活動報告書を参照のこと。また、研究所のウェブサイトにて公開中である。）
事業番号１のNetwork Studies Unitによる「JBDB（日本の人名データベース）」の拡充に関しては例年通りデータの入力と修正を中心に予定していた活動を行う事ができた。また、研究代表者は各地で積極的にプロジェクトの宣伝を行っており、他学のプロジェクトとの連携も強化している。
事業番号2のWater and Society in Japan unitによる同名の書籍は上智大学出版より無事に出版された。また、予算申請時には出版記念講演を行う予定であったが、他の補助金との兼ね合いで研究ユニットのリーダーとメンバーが沖縄に行く必要が出来たため、これを機に現地の水行政や河川の現状視察を行う事になった。
事業番号３のExploring a Japanese Fishing Village through Art Practice Unitは2025年度も北鵜島での活動継続に加えてソフィアシンポジウムを開催。民間や海外のファンドなども獲得して様々な取り組みを精力的に行った。今後は研究成果の出版に向けた活動に重点を置く予定である。
事業番号4のVisual Studies and Displacement in/to Japan (Refugees and Migrants in Tokyo Unit) は多くの聞き取り調査を録画するためにSDカードやSSDドライブを購入する計画であったが、クラウドに保存して、何名もが同時に話し合いをしながら編集作業を行えるプラットフォームを発見したことによりメディアに保存しておく必要が減った。その分の予算をインタビュー調査対象者への謝金や、書き起こし、ドキュメンタリーのポストプロダクション費用などに充てられたため、結果的には当初の計画よりも有意義な予算執行となった。
事業番号5、６、７ はSophia Food Studies Unitの活動である。事業番号5の研究会は予定通り年4回開催できた。また、この研究会の場で企画を練ってレクチャーシリーズも開催。自分たちが発表を行ったコロキウム（事業番号６）も実施でき、データや情報収集、それに基づいた話し合いやペーパーの投稿などをへて、今後は各構成員が執筆を行う段階に入った。また同ユニットとその前駆ユニットが運営していたウェブサイト西荻町学への記事の掲載は予定通り実施できた。
事業番号８の講演会やイベントの実施に関しては2025年度も50を超える講演会や上映会、ワークショップなどを実施。研究ユニットに参加していない所員も積極的に様々な企画を提案、実施することができた。
事業番号９のウェブサイトの拡充と運用に関して2025年度の活動として特筆すべきなのはイベントなどの情報だけでなく、研究機構の活性化予算を利用して今まで予算的に不可能であった旧ウェブサイトからの情報転載が行えた点である。今後もこうした努力を継続することにより研究所の活動における説明責任の強化を図っていきたい。
事業番号１０のメーリングリストの運用管理に関しては本年度も問題なく実施できた。
事業番号１１の客員研究員の受入に関しては2025年度も短期、長期合わせて多くの研究員の受入を行っている。客員研究員として受け入れた研究者が研究所の活動に参加し、所員と協力してイベントの企画やワークショップなどを開催することも増えた。国際交流基金、フルブライト、JSPSなどから研究費を獲得した優秀な研究者の受け入れを通じて国際的に研究の連携を深めるとともに、世界への発信力の強化を目指している。2025年度に研究所で受け入れを行った研究員は長期、短期合わせて26名であった。
6．次年度以降の研究所の中長期的な計画や目標
In 2026-2027, the ICC plans to pursue the following aims:
To host 6-10 visiting scholars and fellows. In particular, ICC aims to attract and mentor young scholars pursuing PhD or post-doctoral research
1. To support seven collaborative research units in their research activities. This year we will support four new research units on Populism in Asian Democracies; Visual Studies and Displacement in Japan; Sexual Violence, Harassment and Consent; and New Perspectives on Japanese Colonialism
2. To host approx. 30 research talks, film screenings and other public events.
3. To host 1-2 international workshops or symposia bringing together researchers from Japan and abroad.
4. To train 1-2 institute research assistants and/or PDs (Sophia PhD students and recent post-graduates).
We will establish four new research units in 2026, two of them headed by new institute members at the assistant professor rank. In this way, the ICC will help to develop the next generation of Sophia scholars. We will also support publication of two edited volumes: one on populism in democracies in Asia and the other presenting new perspective on Japanese colonial history. These book projects bring together academics from multiple Sophia faculties, in addition to providing opportunities for collaboration with scholars from across the world.
Medium Term Vision
In the medium term, the ICC aims to continue to encourage younger institute members and colleagues who are new to Sophia to participate in our research units. Further, we aim to attract a greater diversity of visiting scholars, fellows and speakers and especially to increase representation in these areas from the global south. We will also stride to provide the Sophia and wider community with events on topics of social significance, adding expert analysis to important current debates. In recent months, we have hosted events on the civil war in Syria, refugee experiences in Japan and censorship in East Asia. Over the next two years we will support our research members with the publication of two collaborative edited books.
Long Term Vision
In the long term, the ICC envisions increasing our contribution to public education and community action. We envision offering more content on issues of global significance, including international relations, ecology, gender equality and social justice. To this end, we are supporting publication of edited volumes on populism in Asian democracies and new perspectives on Japanese colonialism. The ICC also envisions attracting visit scholars working on a broader range of areas, expanding from our current concentration on East Asia. We plan to encourage more collaborative research units between our members and scholars at overseas research institutions, building on the success of our collaboration with the Free University of Berlin and Fordham University. Finally, the ICC hopes to support younger researchers in taking leading roles within our research units. In 2026, we will add two new younger faculty members to our institute steering committee.
