There is no doubt about the fact that it is causing unprecedented disruptions all around the world, although it is still difficult to fully measure the impact of COVID-19 because it is still unfolding. Since our systems are deeply intertwined, the sanitary crisis has engendered many disturbances, among which a major cultural crisis. This sector turned out to be mainly based on the audience’s presence, and its contact with the asset. Thus, it immediately suffered from health measures such as the limitation of mobility and gatherings. Unfortunately, this situation is likely to last, if not to bring even more unknown difficulties. Therefore, we must address this problem and consider new coping mechanisms, both for an immediate recovery and for long term anticipation. This leads us to a concept widely discussed but not so much understood, resilience, i.e. the capacity to keep performing and functioning in spite of adversity.
In this talk, we will explore the concept of resilience, its nuances and how it could be applied to cultural heritage practices. We will suggest two main approaches, a first one rather theoretical, based on the subjectivity of heritage values, and a second one more concrete, based on the decomposed multimodality of heritage experiences.
Alice Guerville-Ballé is a cultural heritage historian and research fellow at the ICC specialized in the use of new technologies. She completed her doctorate through Japan, Brazil and Poland, before defending it in France. Her research focuses on digital enhancement practices for cultural heritage, but through hybrid approaches mixing theoretical and concrete thinking. Recently, after a year of research during the pandemic with the support of the Japan Foundation, she explored the concept of resilience, adapted to cultural experiences and institutions.
